A Journey Between the Unconscious and Contemporary Painting: Esotropia, 37x45cm, Painting by Paolo Amoretti

Journey between the unconscious and contemporary painting

Contemporary painting, for me, is not just a visual language, but a way of exploring the deepest layers of the unconscious.

I was born in 1963 and have always been devoted to painting, an art form that has allowed me to explore not only the world around me, but also the deepest layers of my unconscious.

Throughout my career, I have developed a subtle and complex dialogue between the figurative and the abstract, two seemingly opposite dimensions which, in my works, meet and merge to create visual narratives rich in meaning.

Between the Everyday and the Dreamlike

One of the most important aspects of my work is the ability to combine elements of everyday life with almost dreamlike visions. I like to create images that transcend reality, where human and natural figures are suspended between worlds, as if they were fragments of a dream. The colors I use, from earthy tones to brighter ones, reflect the duality between the visible and the invisible, between matter and spirit. My aim is to invite the observer not to stop at the surface, but to enter the painting to discover hidden emotions, memories, and symbols.

The Human Figure and the Landscape

In many of my works, the human figure is central, but not in the traditional portrait sense. For me, the human being is an enigmatic presence, often distorted or fragmented, which reflects the complexity of existence. I like to think that these figures are a means to explore the human condition in its entirety, made up of fragility and contradictions. At the same time, the landscapes I paint are not simple representations of nature. They are metaphors, suspended in time, that describe a familiar and mysterious world where the observer can lose and find himself.

Tradition and Innovation

My work is deeply rooted in Italian visual culture, but I have always been influenced by international stimuli as well. I firmly believe in the importance of bringing tradition into dialogue with a contemporary language, keeping the essence of art alive but, at the same time, always seeking new ways to express myself. This constant renewal is what allows me to feel free and open to new ideas and influences.

The Creative Process

When I paint, I always look for a balance between control and spontaneity. Some brushstrokes are bold and vigorous, others are soft and fluid. I am fascinated by the tactile power of pictorial matter and I like to think that color, the density of shapes and the construction of the image are not only visual, but also physical. My goal is to make observing the painting an almost sensorial experience, where the weight and consistency of the color can be “felt” by the viewer.

Conclusion

I don’t just represent the world, but I try to reinvent it through my visual language. My works are not simple windows onto an external reality, but true portals that lead to other dimensions, where the viewer is invited to reflect, to question and, above all, to feel. My hope is that those who observe my works can feel the same emotions that I feel while I paint.
